College Dorm Planning 101 | Creating a Home Away From Home for Freshman Year
Updated: Oct 4

No one prepares you for the season of sending your child off to college.
One day you're packing lunches, helping with homework, attending school events, and helping them navigate life's challenges. Then suddenly you're preparing a dorm room for a child you've spent your entire adult life caring for.
As a mom, this season feels exciting, emotional, overwhelming, and bittersweet all at the same time. As my daughter prepares to begin her college journey, I've found myself thinking about more than bedding and storage bins. I'm thinking about how to create an environment that supports rest, comfort, productivity, organization, and well-being during one of the biggest transitions of her life.
Instead of approaching dorm planning as a shopping list, I'm approaching it as a design project with purpose.
Start With Space Planning
Before purchasing a single item, it's important to understand how much space you're actually working with. Most freshman dorm rooms range between approximately 150 and 225 square feet and are shared by two students. Once you divide that space between two people, every square foot matters.
Most dorm rooms include:
A Twin XL bed
A desk
A dresser
Closet space
Limited storage
Understanding the layout before making purchases can help prevent overspending and create a more functional room.
Design Before You Buy
One of the biggest mistakes families make is purchasing dorm decor before creating a plan.
I recommend starting with a mood board and basic room layout before buying anything.
Ask yourself:
What colors does your student love?
How do they study?
What helps them relax?
What storage challenges need to be solved?
What items will help them feel comfortable away from home?
Having a plan helps ensure every purchase serves a purpose.
To help simplify the planning process, I've created curated Dorm Room Collections featuring many of my favorite bedding, storage, organization, and decor finds. You can shop my Wayfair and Walmart storefronts for products that help maximize small spaces while creating a comfortable and stylish home away from home. I've organized the collections with functionality, affordability, and comfort in mind to help make dorm shopping a little less overwhelming.
The Sleep & Comfort Zone
The bed is often the most important piece of furniture in a dorm room.
It isn't just where students sleep.
It's where they study, relax, watch movies, talk with friends, recharge after classes, and spend much of their downtime.
That's why comfort should come before decor.
Building a Comfortable Dorm Bed
Dorm mattresses are not known for comfort. Fortunately, there are a few simple layers that can dramatically improve the sleeping experience.
I recommend:
Mattress Encasement for hygiene purposes
Memory Foam Mattress Topper
Quilted Mattress Pad
These layers help create a cleaner, more comfortable sleeping surface while protecting the mattress throughout the school year.
My Favorite Dorm Bedding Formula
For an elevated but practical dorm bed, I recommend:
A quality sheet set
A quilt
A duvet insert
A decorative duvet cover
This layered approach provides comfort, flexibility, and visual interest while remaining easy to maintain.
Decorative Pillow Formula
To create a designer-inspired look without overcrowding the bed:
One lumbar pillow
One 24-inch pillow insert
One 20-inch square pillow insert
For a fuller appearance, purchase pillow covers approximately two inches smaller than the insert size. For sleeping, keep things practical with two standard sleeping pillows.
Add Texture and Warmth
One of my favorite finishing touches is a chunky knit throw blanket.
Layering quilts, duvets, decorative pillows, and textured throws helps transform a basic dorm room into a cozy retreat that feels more like home.
Storage Matters
Storage is often one of the biggest challenges in a dorm room.
Whenever possible, consider elevating or lofting the bed to maximize usable space underneath.
A long bed skirt can help conceal storage bins and create a cleaner appearance.
Other useful storage solutions include:
Under-bed storage containers
Over-the-door organizers
Bedside caddies
Stackable bins
Vertical shelving
In small spaces, vertical storage is often the key to staying organized. If you're looking for dorm-friendly storage solutions, I've included many of my favorite under-bed organizers, rolling drawer units, storage ottomans, bedside caddies, and space-saving accessories in my Walmart storefront collections. These are products I've selected specifically for small-space living and dorm organization.
Functional Furniture That Works Harder
Every piece of furniture should serve more than one purpose.
One of my favorite dorm furniture solutions is a rolling drawer unit.
A drawer unit on wheels provides:
Additional storage
Organization
A bedside surface
Flexibility as the room layout changes
Another great addition is a storage ottoman or footstool.
Not only does it make elevated beds easier to access, but it also provides hidden storage for blankets, seasonal items, or school supplies.
Personalizing the Space
A dorm room should feel like more than a temporary place to sleep.
It should feel familiar, comforting, and reflective of the student's personality.
The bed often becomes the focal point of the room, making the wall above it a great opportunity for personalization.
Some renter-friendly decorating ideas include:
Framed artwork
Gallery walls
Peel-and-stick wallpaper
Fabric wall panels
Removable wall decals
The goal isn't to fill every available wall.
It's to create a space that feels welcoming and uniquely theirs.
Creating a Home Away From Home
At its core, dorm planning isn't really about decorating. It's about helping a young adult transition into a new season of life with confidence.
A thoughtfully designed dorm room can support better sleep, productivity, organization, and overall well-being. When a small space feels comfortable, functional, and personal, it can begin to feel less like a temporary room and more like a true home away from home.
To make the process a little easier, I created a curated Dorm Room Checklist with practical essentials and stylish finds to help you pull everything together. From bedding and storage to lighting, organization, and those finishing touches that make the space feel personal.
Whether you're starting from scratch or filling in the last few details, you can use this list as a simple guide for creating a dorm room that feels organized, comfortable, and ready for this next chapter.
