When Home Changes.... Rediscovering Who You Are in Your Next Chapter
Updated: Sep 25

There are moments in life when the role of home begins to shift. Sometimes the change is obvious. In my last post, Dorm 101, we explored one of those transitions: preparing for a child to leave for college. But that is only one example. There are many seasons in a woman’s life that can create a need for change in her environment.
A child leaves home.
A relationship changes.
A career evolves.
You begin working from home.
You start a business.
You enter retirement.
You become a caregiver.
You rediscover an old passion.
Or maybe nothing dramatic happens at all. You simply wake up one day and realize that the home you created for an earlier version of your life no longer completely supports the woman you are becoming. Often, the physical change is the first thing we notice. A room is no longer being used the same way. A dining room sits untouched. A bedroom feels disconnected from your current life. Your routines have changed, but your surroundings have not. Underneath those visible changes, though, something deeper is happening. You are changing too! And this new chapter of your life may be creating space that you can now reimagine.
The Question Becomes: How do you begin?
Start With the Life Before the Room
When we think about redesigning a space, it is easy to begin with furniture, paint colors, or decor. But I believe the most meaningful spaces begin somewhere else. They begin with the life you want to create. Before deciding what a room should look like, ask yourself what you need from it now. If you are feeling overwhelmed by change, begin with a few simple questions:
Who am I when I am not needed in exactly the same way?
What do I want my days to feel like?
What have I been postponing?
What parts of myself am I ready to rediscover?
Your answers may reveal that the space you need is not necessarily the space you would have designed five years ago. And that is the point. Your home is allowed to evolve with you.
Give Yourself Permission Not to Rush
Creating a new sense of home does not mean immediately transforming every room the moment your life changes. There is no deadline for transformation. You do not have to turn an empty bedroom into an office the week someone moves out. You do not have to completely redecorate because you have entered a new season. And you certainly do not have to erase the chapter that came before. The goal is not to remove the past. It is to make space for what comes next. Maybe the room stays exactly as it is for a while. Maybe eventually it becomes
A guest room.
A reading room.
A creative studio.
An office.
A dressing room.
A wellness space.
Or perhaps a room that serves several different parts of your life.
The important question is not:
What should I do with this room?
It is:
What would support my life now?
Design for the Way You Want to Live
This is the part of interior design that has always interested me most.
A beautiful room is wonderful. But the deeper question is:
How does this space support the life you want to live?
Maybe your next chapter needs more calm. Maybe it needs creativity. Maybe it needs friendship and dinners around the table. Maybe it needs mornings with coffee, a journal, and nowhere to rush. Maybe it needs a workspace for the business you have been thinking about building.
Maybe it needs a bedroom that finally feels like a sanctuary. Maybe it needs a corner where you can read, pray, write, dream, create, or simply be still. Your home can become a physical reflection of those intentions. That is what I mean when I talk about beautiful living with intention.
The furniture matters.
The lighting matters.
The color, texture, art, and objects matter.
But what those things allow you to experience matters even more.
Rediscover the Woman Living There
When the rhythm of life changes, something interesting can happen. You begin to notice yourself again. Not necessarily the woman you used to be. But the woman you are becoming now.
What interests you?
What excites you?
What have you outgrown?
What do you want to learn?
Where do you want to travel?
How do you want to spend your mornings?
Who do you want sitting around your table?
What do you want your home to feel like when you walk through the door?
These questions are not selfish. They are invitations. You can appreciate the life you have built and still want something new. You can love who you have been and still be curious about who you are becoming. That is the beauty of transition. It does not always ask you to abandon an identity. Sometimes it simply asks you to expand it.
Begin With One Space
If your home suddenly feels different, you do not have to redesign everything. Start with one space. Choose an area that could better support the life you are creating now. Then ask yourself:
How do I want to feel here?
Peaceful?
Inspired?
Rested?
Creative?
Connected?
Energized?
Once you identify the feeling, begin designing around it. Maybe you add softer lighting. Move a chair near the window. Create a small coffee or tea ritual. Bring in art that speaks to you. Add books you have been wanting to read. Create a workspace that makes you excited to begin something new. Clear away things that belong to an earlier season. Introduce colors or textures that feel more like who you are today. You do not have to change everything for a space to begin feeling different. Small changes can become powerful signals that your life is moving forward.
The Next Chapter Can Be Beautiful
As the seasons of your life change, home may look different. Your routines may change. The people around your table may change. The way you spend your days may change. And you may change too. But there is still so much life waiting to be designed. Maybe this season is not simply about an empty room. Maybe it is about creating space.
Space to reflect.
Space to rediscover.
Space to rest.
Space to create.
Space to dream again.
Space to become.
Because sometimes the most meaningful transformation in our homes is not the room we redesign. It is the woman who begins to see herself differently inside it.
